The Keuka Lake is due to its Y-shape an atypical representative of the Finger Lakes in the US state of New York . Because of its shape, the lake was also called Crooked Lake in the past . The current name Keuka ( ˈkjuːkə ) comes from the Iroquois languages and means canoeing place , in the Seneca language also lake with an elbow .
The lake was created as a moraine lake at the end of the last ice age . Keuka Lake is drained from the Keuka Lake Outlet, which leaves the lake at its northeastern end in Penn Yan and flows into another of the Finger Lakes, Seneca Lake . The lake's outflow was later expanded into a canal , the Crooked Lake Canal , which connected the two lakes.
Keuka Lake is 218 m and is 32 km long. Its width varies between one and three kilometers. The length of the shoreline is 96 km. The water surface of the lake is 47 km², the maximum depth 57 m, the average depth 31 m.
The lake has the following edible fish: American char , brown trout , rainbow trout , the inland form of the Atlantic salmon , black bass , largemouth bass and American river bass . The high fish population is supported by a large number of bait fish, especially Alosa pseudoharengus .
Penn Yann is at the northeast end of the lake, Branchport at the northwest end and Hammondsport at the south end. Hammondsport was the home of Glenn Curtiss , a pioneer of naval aviation, and now houses the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum .
The Keuka College is located in Keuka Park on the western shore of the eastern Seearms. The Keuka Lake State Park is located on the eastern shore of Nordwestarms. The YMCA Camp Cory is located on the east bank of the northeast arm. Camp Good Days and Special Times is on the west bank of the Northwest Arm.
An important economic factor in the region is the cultivation of grapes and the production of wine .
ecology
The Keuka Lake Association (KLA) monitors the water quality of the lake and its catchment area. The spread of the European migrant mussel in North American waters also affects Keuka Lake.
