history

The first wooden house was built in Penn Yan in 1799. In 1823 the hamlet became the seat of administration for the newly created county, Yates County, and in 1833 received parish status.

The first settlers were mainly followers of Jemima Wilkinson (1753-1819), a religious zealot who came from Cumberland , Providence County . Claiming a divine commission, she preached in Rhode Island , Connecticut , Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania . She then received a larger piece of land near the village and named it Jerusalem in 1789 after establishing the village of Hopeton in 1788 at the mouth of Lake Keuka, about a mile from Lake Seneca . Many of her followers followed her there, and she too lived there from 1790. At the turn of the 19th century, their followers broke up.

Some Amish and Mennonites have recently settled in the area.
