Providence County is a county in the state of Rhode Island in the United States . In 2010 the county had 626,667 residents and a population density of 585 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Providence .

The county has an area of ​​1129 square kilometers, of which 58 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Norfolk County , Bristol County , Bristol County , Kent County , Windham County, and Worcester County .

history

Providence County was founded as Providence Plantations County in 1703 and renamed Providence County in 1729.

The county has a protected site of particular importance to American history, the Roger Williams National Memorial . 15 places in the county have National Historic Landmark status . 412 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 25, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Providence County's population was 621,602 in 239,936 households and 152,839 families. The population was composed of 78.38 percent white, 6.55 percent black and 2.90 percent Asian. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 13.39 percent of the population. The per capita income was $ 19,255; 11.9 percent of families and 15.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line .
