Jerusalem is a city in Yates County in the US state of New York in the United States . It was named after the city of Jerusalem in Israel .
Jerusalem is located on State Route 54A and is 169 square kilometers. 9.97% of this is water, because parts of Lake Keuka belong to the city . The city has 4,469 inhabitants (census, 2010).
Jerusalem is the birthplace of Congressman Thomas B. Jackson (1797–1881).
history
The Jerusalem area was part of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase land purchase. The settlement was founded in 1789 and belonged to Ontario County .
The first settlers were mainly followers of Jemima Wilkinson , a religious zealot from Cumberland, Providence County. She named the settlement Jerusalem in 1789.
In 1823 the city became part of the newly formed Yates County .
Branchport, a hamlet (English Hamlet) in Jerusalem, is one of the alleged birthplaces of the legendary chief Red Jacket of the Seneca people .
Demographics
Jerusalem has 4,525 inhabitants (2000 census), 1,606 households and 1,117 families. The population density is 29.7 / km².
