Honeoye Lake [ ˈhʌniɔɪ ] is a 717 hectare lake in Ontario County of the US state New York .

The lake is one of the Finger Lakes , a group of lakes in western New York that were formed as moraine lakes at the end of the last ice age .

"Honeoye" is a Seneca word meaning "lying finger" or "where the finger is". According to tradition, the name comes from the local story of an Indian who cut off his finger after being bitten by a rattle snake .

Most of the lake belongs to the city of Richmond , a smaller part in the southwest belongs to Canadice . The Hamlet Honeoye is north of the lake.

Honeoye Lake is the second smallest of the Finger Lakes and is west of the main lakes. To the west are the other smaller lakes in the group of lakes: Canadice Lake , Hemlock Lake and Conesus Lake .

The lake is 245 m above sea level. It has a main extent in north-south direction of 7.2 km, a width of 1.3 km. Its outflow is the Honeoye Creek . This leaves the lake at its northern end and flows to the Genesee River . At the southern end of the lake, the Honeoye Inlet flows into the Honeoye Lake as the most important tributary.

The Honeoye Lake Park Association manages a large part of the summer cottages as well as a number of year-round inhabited accommodations ( Times-Union Tract ) on the east bank of the lake.

The edible fish caught in the lake include eyeglasses , American perch and blue sunfish ( Lepomis macrochirus ). The "Ring of Fire" tradition is celebrated annually on Labor Day weekend. Bengal fires are then lit along the lakeshore.

During the winter the lake is frozen over. Then there are leisure activities such as ice fishing , ice skating and ice sailing .

On the east bank near the south end of Honeoye Lake is the Honeoye Lake Boat Launch State Park . This is open from May to November.
