The Skaneateles Lake is a lake of the Finger Lakes in the State of New York . The name "Skaneateles" means "long lake" in one of the local Iroquois languages.
The lake was created as a moraine lake at the end of the last ice age .
Skaneateles Lake has an area of 26 km², a length of 26 km and a maximum width of 2.4 km. The lake is at an altitude of 263 m .
The Skaneateles is considered the cleanest of the Finger Lakes. It serves as a drinking water reservoir for Syracuse and other cities. For this reason, special attention is paid to the water quality in the lake and its catchment area .
The shores of Skaneateles Lake belong to the following counties: Onondaga County , Cayuga County, and Cortland Counties . The place Skaneateles with a population of about 2500 is located at the northern end of the lake. There have been summer cottages by the lake since 1881 . The number is now over 2000.
The lake is popular as a sailing area. There have been regattas on Skaneateles Lake since 1847.
