The Canandaigua Lake is the fourth largest lake in the Finger Lakes in the State of New York .
The city of Canandaigua is located on the northern shore of the lake. The place Naples is a few miles south of the lake. The lake was created as a moraine lake at the end of the last ice age . The name "Canandaigua" is derived from a Seneca word that means "chosen place".
Canandaigua Lake is 26 km long, up to 2.4 km wide and has a water surface of 43.5 km² at 210 m height. Near its north end is Squaw Island . About 50 percent of the surrounding area is forest. The remaining area is mainly used for agriculture. 97% of the 58 km shoreline are privately owned. The Canandaigua Lake State Marine Park is located within the boundaries of the City of Canandaigua on the northern end of the lake. It offers a dock and access to the lake. The fishing season runs from May to mid-October.
history
The first steamship in the Finger Lakes region was the Enterprise . This was laid down in 1825. Steamship travel on Canandaigua Lake began in 1827 with the Lady of the Lake and ended in 1935 when the Idler ceased passenger services. There were 14 larger boats that were commercially in use on the lake at the time. Today the Canandaigua Lady , a replica of a double-deck paddle steamer from the 19th century, continues the tradition. The Indians and the white settlers signed the Treaty of Canandaigua north of the lake . The corresponding document can be found in the Memorial Museum . Many families from nearby Rochester have second homes in the area around the lake .
Squaw Island
Squaw Island is at the northern end of Canandaigua Lake. It is the smallest Fish and Wildlife Management Area in New York State and is one of the two islands of the eleven Finger Lakes.
Worth seeing
The Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion State Historic Park is located on the northern shore. The County Road 12 leads from the south end of the lake to Naples and offers beautiful views of the lake, especially in the fall. The new South Bristol Overlook is also along the road .
