Canandaigua is a city in Ontario County in the state of New York in the United States . The name is derived from the name of a historical Seneca village and means "The Chosen City".

The city is located at the northern end of Canandaigua Lake , 39 km southeast of Rochester and 58 km west of Syracuse . Parts of six neighboring cities share the postal address of Canandaigua and the postal code 14424.

At the 2010 census, the place had 10,545 inhabitants. It is the administrative seat of Ontario County, although some administrative offices are also located in the neighboring town of Hopewell .

history

The original village consisted of 23 long houses. Today the West Avenue Cemetery is located there. The first European visitors were the French explorers Robert Cavelier de La Salle and René de Bréhant de Galinée in 1669 . On September 10, 1779, the village was destroyed by the Sullivan expedition . After the war, pioneer settlers came from eastern New York and New England . On November 11, 1794, the Treaty of Canandaigua was signed by representatives of the United States of America and six Iroquois tribes in the city.

Canandaigua was an important railway junction and home port for several steamers in the mid-19th century. The steamship operation on Canandaigua Lake ended in 1935. Since 1995, the Finger Lakes Railway has been providing rail freight connections .

Attractions

Of note is the Canandaigua Academy, a high school founded in 1791 and public high school since 1900 . In 2007 it had 90 full-time teachers and 1,372 students. Newsweek magazine named it one of the 1,500 Best Public High Schools in the United States in 2009 and 2010. One focus is on music education: the school has its own symphony orchestra, a wind orchestra, a chamber orchestra, two jazz bands and four choirs.

The Constellation Brands - Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center , opened in 1983, is known nationwide , a semi- stadium that seats 20,000 spectators and is used for rock concerts. Numerous well-known artists have performed here, including Ray Charles , Eric Clapton , Whitney Houston , Elton John and Sting .
