Fort Gillingham
Fort Gillingham , also Gillingham Fort , was a fort on the south bank of the River Medway in the English county of Kent .
The fort, built in 1669, served together with the Cockham Wood Fort to defend the Chatham dock against attacks from the sea. Upnor Castle had already taken on this role a century earlier.
Fort Gillingham was demolished long ago, but its circular walls and trenches are clearly on the Ordnance Survey visible card of 1869, where it is mentioned as a coast guard station.
Today the site of the former fort is called Gillingham Pier .
