The Bowen Bridge is a four-lane road bridge over the Derwent River in the southeast of the Australian state of Tasmania . It is halfway between the Tasman Bridge in Hobart and the Bridgewater Bridge in Bridgewater . The Goodwood Road (B35) runs over it and connects the Brooker Highway (N1) in Glenorchy on the west bank with East Derwent Highway (B32) on the east bank.
The bridge was built with federal funds of AU $ 49 million after the Tasman Bridge collapse in 1975 and was officially opened on February 23, 1984. She is supposed to take over rush hour traffic in Hobart if an accident happens on the Tasman Bridge. However, a test revealed massive traffic problems in this case, mainly if the infrastructure between the two bridges on the east bank of the Derwent River cannot cope with the traffic flows.
