The Oswego River is a tributary of Lake Ontario in the US state of New York .
River course
The Oswego River arises at the confluence of the Seneca River and Oneida River at Three Rivers . From there it flows north, passing the cities of Phoenix , Fulton and Minetto . It flows through the two counties Onondaga and Oswego . In the city of Oswego it finally flows into Lake Ontario.
Its length is 38 km. The catchment area covers 13,266 km². 1.2 million people live in it. The river is one of the polluted waters ("Areas of Concern") in the catchment area of the Great Lakes .
Origin of name
The name of the river is derived from the Mohawk word "Oswego" and literally means: "the mouth of the river".
Oswego Canal
The river was expanded for shipping in 1828 as the Oswego Canal and connects the Erie Canal with Lake Ontario. There are seven locks along the course of the river, numbered 1 to 8 in the downstream direction. The number 4 was left out.
