From 1976 until 1992 he was director of the Widespread Depression Orchestra , which initially operated from Providence (Rhode Island) , where he lived from 1975. He later settled in New York City and took lessons from Jimmy Lyons , Andy McGhee, and Phil Woods . Hashim also worked with a number of blues musicians, such as Muddy Waters (1976), Sonny Greer (1878) and Clarence Gatemouth Brown (1986). Since 1979 he has led his own quartet and worked for several years with the pianist Mike LeDonne . The album The Peacocks (for the Stash label ) was created in 1983 with pianist Jimmy Rowles . In 1992, Hashim was a member of the first American band to travel to China since 1949. He currently (2019) plays with Phillip Johnston & The Silent Six.

Hashim also worked as a composer for film, TV and dance performances. For the labels Stash, 33 and Hep he recorded a number of albums since the early 1990s, on which, in addition to LeDonne, the musicians Claudio Roditi , David Newton , Dennis Irwin and Peter Washington participated. For Richard Cook and Brian Morton, Hashim is considered to be a modern repertoire player of classical jazz and its standards , such as Billy Strayhorn ( Multicolored Blue ) or Kurt Weill's interpretations ( Green Up Time ). In terms of style, he is based on the great swing saxophonists like Johnny Hodges or Benny Carter .
