Phillip Johnston

Phillip Johnston (born January 22, 1955 ) is an American musician (including saxophonist , pianist ) of avant-garde jazz and film composer .

Phillip Johnston was director of the Microscopic Septet during the 1980s ; A member of the band was among others the young John Zorn . The group combined modern ideas (similar to the lounge lizards ) with big band and swing sounds. After a creative break from 1988 to 1992 Johnston returned to the jazz scene with the formation Big Trouble and recorded a number of avant-garde jazz albums with band members such as David Hofstra and Marcus Rojas for the jazz label Black Saint , such as "Phillip Johnson's Big Trouble" or " Flood on the Farm ”. In 1998 he worked for films such as the Doris Dörrie film “Geld”, with guest musicians such as Dave Douglas , Erik Friedlander and Mark Feldman , which was published on the album “Film Works” on John Zorn's Tzadik label.

Most recently, Johnston processed the musical world of Captain Beefhearts ("Fast'n'Bulbous") with guitarist Gary Lucas . Johnston also played in a duo with accordionist Guy Klucevsek .
