Erik Friedlander

Erik Friedlander (born July 1, 1960 in New York City ) is an American cellist , composer and band leader of free and creative jazz , free improvisation and contemporary music.
Live and act
Erik Friedlander grew up in Rockland County in an artistic and music-loving family; his father is the photographer Lee Friedlander , who also took photographs for the record covers of Atlantic Records in the 1960s . Friedlander began playing guitar at the age of six and the cello two years later.
Friedlander is considered a veteran of the New York experimental New York downtown scene , he worked in this context with many formations in the early 1990s, but also with musicians such as Fred Hersch , Meredith D'Ambrosio and Terence Blanchard , on his soundtrack album for Malcolm X film "X" he starred in 1992. He was best known for his collaboration with saxophonist and composer John Zorn , as in his Bar Kokba project. The cellist has also worked with musicians as diverse as Laurie Anderson , Uri Caine , Dave Douglas , Ellery Eskelin , Lee Konitz , Joe Lovano , Sylvie Courvoisier , Courtney Love and Phil Woods . He is also a member of the Topaz jazz / fusion quartet . In the 1990s he recorded several albums with this band and the formation Chimera . a. on Zorn's label Tzadik .
In 2015 he won the Down Beat Critic Polls in the category of various instruments.
