Lee Friedlander

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lee Norman Friedlander (born July 14, 1934 in Aberdeen , Washington , as Wash Aberdeen ) is an American photographer .

Life

Friedlander studied at the Art Center in Los Angeles , began photography in 1946 or 1948, and became known as a critical chronicler of everyday American life through brilliant black and white documentaries. Friedlander initially photographed street scenes and later turned to other photographic genres such as nudes, landscapes, flowers, trees, self-portraits ( Self Portraits , 1970) and the representation of different professions. The work in series is characteristic of his photography. In the 1960s he also provided cover photos for some Atlantic Records albums . In the late 1970s, he wrote reports on forgotten monuments in American history ( American Monuments , 1976), unemployment, and other topics (e.g., American Musicians , 1998). Friedlander's Opus At Work received a lot of attention . Six different series on industrial work, between heavy industry and call centers, come together here. In his opinion, the book is the best way to present or even publish pictures, because here the photographer has the opportunity to complete entire series of pictures.

Friedlander's work was first presented in a solo show at George Eastman House in Rochester in 1963 . Lee Friedlander was influenced by Walker Evans , among others . He has taught at the University of Minnesota , among others . In 1999 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . He has been an elected member of the American Philosophical Society since 2007 .

Lee Friedlander lives and works in New York City . The cellist Erik Friedlander is his son.

It should be noted in his work that he incorporates so-called image errors into his pictures. One of his best-known works is a portrait in which the sitter's face is only half visible because a light bulb is switched on in front of the face.
