history
Rockland County was formed on February 23, 1798 from the southeastern part of Orange County .
Three locations have National Historic Landmark status , the Stony Point Battlefield , De Wint House and the Palisades Interstate Park . 78 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 21, 2018).

The county covers an area of 516 square kilometers, of which 65 square kilometers are water. Rockland County is bordered to the south by Bergen County in New Jersey , to the west by Orange County and to the east by the Hudson River , which forms the border with Westchester County .
