Dutchess County is a county in the state of New York in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 280,150 people and a population density of 135 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Poughkeepsie .
history
It was named after Maria Beatrix of Modena , Duchess of York (Duchess of York) , second wife of the future King James II , who was still Duke of York in 1683.
There are four National Historic Sites in the county . Eight locations have the status of a National Historic Landmark . A total of 249 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 17, 2018).
geography
The county has an area of 2,138 square kilometers, of which 62 square kilometers are water. The largest lake in the county is 102 hectares large Whaley Lake , a natural lake, which has now been extended to a water tank. The second largest lake in the county is 47-acre Sylvan Lake , a former quarry. The 30 acre Thompson Pond is of glacial origin and was declared a National Natural Landmark in 1973 with the surrounding Stissing Mountain . The highest lake in the county is the 389 m high Beacon Reservoir , which is located southeast of North Beacon Mountain .
