The Sylvan Lake is a lake near the hamlet of the same name in Beekman , New York in the United States. It is the deepest and second largest lake in Dutchess County . The lake is a popular destination for excursions and there are several holiday camps and a large campsite on its shore.

geography

The lake has an irregular shape and a surface of 47  hectares . It lies on the southwestern border of the town with East Fishkill . The hills on its northeast side rise to a height of up to 250  m , about one hundred meters above the water level of the lake and have no name. The unincorporated hamlet of Sylvan Lake is southeast and east of the body of water. Dutchess County Route 10 runs northwest of the hamlet along the waterfront and connects the place via New York State Route 82 with the nearby Taconic State Parkway .

To the southwest of the lake the hills are lower. The lake drains via an unnamed stream that initially flows northwards through a 37 hectare wetland between two hills, but then turns south and the water from the 2.1 km² catchment area of the lake leads a few kilometers to Fishkill Creek . From there the water flows to the Hudson River at Beacon .

The lake is adjacent to a housing estate called Chelsea Cove, whose residents are allowed access to the lake. There is a small beach with a shallow water zone before the bottom drops deeply. Sylvan Lake Beach Park is a private campsite and is located on a different stretch of shore. The rest of the 2.9 km long shoreline is owned by private individuals and holiday camps.

Hydrology

The lake has a maximum depth of 43 m, making it the deepest in Dutchess County. Originally there was a quarry here , so the banks drop steeply and the lowest point is in the center of the lake.

recreation

There are numerous swimming facilities on the lakeshore. Boat traffic is permitted, but diesel-powered engines are prohibited. Due to the great depth, diving is only permitted with appropriate certificates for open waters.

Fishing from shore or from boats requires a permit valid in New York. The lake has populations of real perch and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation puts 1,700 trout fish spawn in each spring . In winter the lake is attractive for ice fishermen , so special fishing rules apply. Trout can be fished all year round, there is no lower size limit, but the number of fish caught is limited to five per day.
