history

The land on which Hyde Park is located was partially owned by Dr. Samual Staats bought out of the Pawling patent, acquired in part by Peter Fauconnier and a number of New York businessmen in 1703 north of the Pawling patent. The Pawling patent was the land acquired from the Indians by Henry Pawling in 1695, which essentially covers what is now Dutchess County .

The name Hyde Park came about later. Dr. John Bard, who moved to the area, named his property in honor of Edward Hyde, Lord Cornbury , the governor of New York from 1702 to 1708. In 1804 a local owner named his inn the "Hyde Park Inn" and applied for the post office. It was not uncommon for post offices to be located in public houses at the time, and so the Hyde Park Post Office came into being . Eventually the post office name prevailed as the address for the place and in 1812 the name was officially changed from Stoutenburgh to Hyde Park. In 1821 Hyde Park was detached from the Town of Clinton and raised to town itself . In 1900 the city had 2806 inhabitants.

Hyde Park became known as a place of wealthy and wealthy New York businessmen who settled in the central Hudson Valley and built summer residences. The most famous Gilded Age villas were built for Frederick William Vanderbilt and in the suburb Staatsburg for Ogden Mills and are open to the public today.
