Wappingers Falls is a village in Dutchess County in the US state of New York . In 2010 the place had 5521 inhabitants. The name is derived from the tribe of the Wappinger , who lived in this area east of the Hudson River before the white settlers .

According to the data of the United States Census Bureau , the village has an area of 3.0 km², of which 2.9 km² is land and just under 0.2 km² (= 4.96%) is water.
The village is divided by Wappinger Creek ; the area south of it belongs to the Town of Wappinger , the remaining third in the north of the place belongs to the Town of Poughkeepsie .
The post office, which serves both Village Wappingers Falls and the Town of Wappinger, is located in Wappingers Falls, which is why both towns (including parts of Fishkill, East Fishkill, Poughkeepsie and Lagrange) have the ZIP code WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY 12590 wear. This often creates confusion, especially when travelers or truckers are looking for an address in the Town of Wappinger with a ZIP code pointing to the much smaller Village of Wappingers Falls.
US Highway 9 runs through the town, as does New York State Route 9D .
history
The area of Wappinger Falls was part of the Rombout patent, which was acquired by Francis Rombout in 1685 and covered the southern part of Dutchess County. The area of the Town of Wappinger was established in 1659, and in 1781 the southern part of the village was incorporated around Wappinger Creek.
The local waterfall was important for the initial industrial development. The Wappingers Falls Historic District and other historic buildings on the National Register of Historic Places testify to the town's past .

On the corner between Church Street and West Main Street stands the Bain Commercial Building (entered in the National Register of Historic Places in 1984), the last remaining building of the Second Empire .
Demographics
At the time of the 2000 United States Census, Wappingers Falls was inhabited by 4,929 people. The population density was 1,669.4 people per km ². There were 2119 housing units at an average of 717.7 per km ². The Village population was 82.02% White , 5.98% Black or African American , 0.26% Native American , 3.04% Asian , 5.64% said they were racial , and 3.04% named two or more races. 15.05% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Wappingers Falls were distributed across 1980 households out of which 31.8% were living in children under 18 years of age. 40.5% of households were married, 14.8% had a female head of household without a husband, and 39.8% were not families. 31.9% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 11.6% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.11.
The village population was divided into 24.4% minors, 10.0% 18–24 year olds, 33.2% 25–44 year olds, 19.3% 45–64 year olds and 13.1% aged 65 years or more. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 women there were 92.2 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 89.3 men.
The median household income in Wappingers Falls was 39,123 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 50,000 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 38,147, compared with $ 26,607 for women. The per capita income in Wappingers Falls was $ 20,491. 12.3% of the population and 10.4% of families had an income below the poverty line , including 15.1% of minors and 14.3% of those aged 65 and over.
