The Bain Commercial Building is a late 19th-century brick building on the corner of Church Street and West Main Street ( NY-9D ) in Wappingers Falls , New York . It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

The building is the only remaining intact building in the architectural style of the Second Empire in this village . It is also one of the few historic structures in the part of the Town of Poughkeepsie west of Wappingers Creek , which was once Channingville before it was merged with Wappingers Falls in 1871. The building has hardly been changed since its construction and serves as an apartment building on the upper floors and for commercial purposes on street level.

building

The two-story building has five bays each in length and width and has the typical feature of the Second Empire, a mansard roof made of slate panels covered in several colors . The foundation of the building is built into the slope, so a few steps are necessary at the front of the house to reach the entrance. The centrally located entrance to the upper floor is flanked by three-part shop fronts, the entrances of which are each surrounded by two large windows.

The eaves are adorned with cantilevers and a paneled cornice , which is repeated in a smaller, less ornamented way above the shop fronts. There are five windows on the second floor, plus three bay windows on the roof, which is interrupted by chimneys in the middle of the north or south side. Columns of cast iron supporting the building, where the facade elements intersect.

To simplify the changed use of the building as an apartment building, wooden stairs and sheds have been added to the rear, one of which is original.

history

The house is believed to have been built by the Bain family in 1875, shortly after Channingville became part of Wappingers Falls. The house was both the family's home and business, with the second store possibly rented out.

In the twentieth century, when the local industry was slowly declining, the descendants of the Bain family, who still owned the house, converted the apartments on the second floor into apartments and carried out the necessary renovations. The mixed use of the house still exists today.

Single structure

Stand-alone commercial buildings of the Second Empire are not common in an urban or suburban setting; the Bain building thus testifies to the underdeveloped settlement in Channingville at the time, in particular due to its distance from the Back and the Wappingers Falls Historic District . Due to its single location, various refined adaptations to the architectural style were possible, for example on the eaves, the arrangement of the sloping upper windows and the multi-colored slate roof.
