The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation ( NYS OPRHP ) is a New York state agency that has three main roles in state-administered state parks . These are:

  • Scientific recommendations for the protection and preservation of the natural resources of flora and fauna and preservation of the state historical sites ;
  • the correctness of and compliance with the legally regulated nature conservation laws and ordinances;
  • Maintain the environmental health of natural resources (e.g. water) according to strict standards.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation employs approximately 2,275 permanent staff and approximately 5,000 seasonal workers, and has a budget of approximately $ 380 million per year. The NYS OPRHP manages the following areas (as of 2008):

  • 18 visitor parks
  • 27 marinas
  • 28 golf courses
  • 35 state historic sites
  • 39 commercially operated cabins
  • 53 recreational areas by rivers and lakes
  • 76 landscaped beaches
  • 168 state parks
  • 817 weekend cabins
  • 2160 kilometers of hiking trails, 604 bridges and hundreds of kilometers of roads
  • 5,000 buildings
  • 8,355 campsites

Compared to similar agencies in the United States , the NYS OPRHP leads the way in terms of both the number of sites and the number of campsites. It ranks fifth in terms of the size of the areas to be managed and third in terms of annual visitor numbers. Numerous events are organized and hosted by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation . For example, a US Open golf tournament was held at the Bethpage Black Course administered by the NYS OPRHP .
