Chemung County is a county in the state of New York in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 91,070 people and a population density of 86 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Elmira .

The county covers an area of 1,064 square kilometers, of which 7 square kilometers are water.
history
The county was formed in 1683 and named after the Cayuga Indians .
One place has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Newtown Battlefield , which is reminiscent of a battle from the American Revolutionary War . A total of 37 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 18, 2018).
