Washington County is a county in the state of New York in the United States . At the 2010 census , Washington County had 63,216 people and a population density of 29.4 people per square kilometer. The county seat has been Fort Edward since 1994 ; before that it was Hudson Falls .

history
The county was formed from Albany County on March 12, 1772 as Charlotte County . In 1784 it was renamed Washington County, after US President George Washington .
Two places in the county have National Historic Landmark status , the New York State Barge Canal and the Lemuel Haynes House . 48 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 21, 2018).
