history

The settlement is named after the city of Cambridge in England . The area was originally part of Albany County , but in 1791 it was annexed to Washington County. The settlement of Cambridge dates back to the 1760s and began after the end of the French and Indian War , when the previously disputed border region became safer. After the American War of Independence , population growth began, which was encouraged when the Champlain Canal was built in 1825 . This facilitated the transport of flax and wool , which were produced in the flat area, but could not be further processed due to a lack of water power .

The railroad first reached Cambridge in 1852 when the Troy and Rutland Railroad was built. A train station was built in what was then the hamlet of North White Creek. The construction of the railway favored industrial development. In 1866 the three towns of Cambridge, Dorr Corners and North White Creek merged and incorporated themselves into the Village of Cambridge. In 1879 the Rice Seed Company was founded, which by 1900 had grown to become the largest employer in the village with around 200 employees.

A series of buildings in the Cambridge Historic District , which has been included on the National Register of Historic Places , commemorate this past . These structures include the Rice Seed Company complex and an 1878 Victorian- style theater .
