Putnam County is a county in the state of New York in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 95,745 residents and a population density of 160 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Carmel .
history
The county was formed in 1812 and named after Israel Putnam , a hero of the French and Indian War and general of the American War of Independence .
One location has National Historic Landmark status , the Manitoga Estate . 48 buildings and sites in the county are listed in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 20, 2018).
geography
The county has an area of 638 square kilometers, of which 39 square kilometers are water. Putnam County is bordered to the north by Dutchess County , to the south by Westchester County , to the east by the state of Connecticut and to the west the Hudson River forms the border with Orange County .
