Cold Spring , also called Cold Spring-on-Hudson , is a small town directly on the Hudson River about 80 km north of New York City in the northeastern United States . The place is part of the Town of Philipstown in Putnam County . In 2000, Cold Spring had 1983 residents; at the 2010 census it was 2013 residents.

The unique location in the Hudson Valley in the middle of the Hudson Highlands is significant . Cold Spring borders the Hudson River to the west and is surrounded by Hudson Highlands State Park.
history
The first settlers settled in what is now Cold Spring from around 1730. At the beginning of the 19th century a village emerged along the Hudson River that lived primarily from trade. The establishment of the nearby ironworks West Point Foundry in 1818 was decisive for the subsequent upswing of the place. Here, especially during the American Civil War, weapons and ammunition were manufactured for the Union Army , so that in the second half of the 19th century numerous workers and with they drew further trade to Cold Spring. With the closure of the hut in 1911, the place lost its importance again. Since the 1970s, Cold Spring has been increasingly developed for tourism.

Cold Spring is the birthplace of Emily Warren Roebling (1843–1903), who completed the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge after her husband Washington Augustus Roebling took over as site manager for the from because of a serious illness that he had contracted during the construction work his father's planned bridge failed.
