St. Lawrence County is a county in the state of New York in the United States . At the 2010 census , the county had 111,944 residents and a population density of 16.1 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Canton .
geography
The county covers an area of 7,307.5 square kilometers, of which 365.4 square kilometers are water. The county is the largest county in New York by area. As a former ground moraine, the area is largely flat to hilly, heavily forested and criss-crossed by a large number of mostly small lakes. St. Lawrence County is bordered to the north by the Saint Lawrence River, which forms the border between the United States and Canada and is also the largest body of water in the county. Other important bodies of water are the Oswegatchie River , the Grass River and the Raquette River , all of the right-hand tributaries of the St. Lawrence River.

history
The county was formed on March 3, 1802 and after Lawrence St. ( St. Lawrence River named).
One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Adirondack Forest Preserve . 73 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 21, 2018).
In 1856, St. Lawrence University was founded in Canton .
