The Oswegatchie River is a right tributary of the Saint Lawrence River in northwest New York State .

River course

The Oswegatchie River rises on Wolf Mountain at an altitude of about 550  m . Initially it flows in a northerly direction. The High Falls on the Oswegatchie River ( ) lie on the course of the river. The Oswegatchie River later turns east and flows into a western arm of Cranberry Lake , a reservoir. He leaves this at its northern end below the Cranberry Lake Dam . Shortly afterwards the river is dammed up to the Chaumont Pond . Further downstream there are other smaller reservoirs on the Oswegatchie River: Browns Falls Reservoir and Flat Rock Reservoir . The Little River flows into the southern end of the Flat Rock Reservoir. The Oswegatchie River flows in a predominantly northwest direction. He passes the places Fine and Edwards . It then turns west and takes the West Branch Oswegatchie River on the left. The river flows through the small town of Gouverneur and then forms a 15 km loop in the direction of the west-southwest. After the sharp bend, it continues to flow in a predominantly north-easterly direction. The places De Kalb and Heuvelton lying on the riverbank. The runoff of the Black River to the west flows into the Oswegatchie River, which is dammed shortly afterwards at the Eel Weir . The last 8 kilometers the river flows in a northerly direction and flows into the St. Lawrence River in Ogdensburg , which flows to the northeast. The Oswegatchie River has a length of 220 km.
