The Grass River is a right tributary of the St. Lawrence River in St. Lawrence County of the US state of New York .
River course
The Grass River arises in the northern foothills of the Adirondack Mountains at the confluence of its headwaters South Branch and Middle Branch Grass River . It flows mainly in a northerly direction. After almost 6 km the North Branch Grass River flows into the river on the right. The Grass River flows east past Hermon . It continues its course north and flows through the city of Canton . The places Madrid and Louisville lie on its banks. Shortly before reaching the St. Lawrence River, the Grass River turns east. It flows through the city of Massena . There the Massena Power Canal , a side canal of the St. Lawrence River, meets the river on the left. After another 10 km, the Grass River eventually flows below the Saint Lawrence Seaway located lock Snell Lock to the Saint Lawrence River. The Grass River has a length of 117 km.
Origin of name
The Grass River was named after the French admiral François Joseph Paul de Grasse (1722–1788). He supported the American armed forces in 1781 during the Battle of Yorktown in the American War of Independence . In the past there was also the spelling Grasse River .
Hydropower plants
The Pyrites hydropower station ( ⊙ ) is located on the Grass River, 10 km south of Canton . It has three turbines with a total output of 8.2 MW.

The 10 km long section of the river from the Massena Power Canal to the river mouth is contaminated with PCBs . The causes are several industrial companies in Massena, including Alcoa .
