Gary Lucas

Gary Lucas (born June 20, 1952 in Syracuse , New York ) is an American fusion guitarist and songwriter.

Live and act

Lucas played guitar as a nine-year-old and french horn in high school . He studied English at Yale University , but also worked as a college disc jockey and music director of the university radio WYBC FM. He then went on a journey: in Vienna he had an engagement as a guitarist in Leonard Bernstein's mass, then he stayed in Taiwan for two years , where he was locally successful with the O-Bay-Gone Band he founded . From 1980 to 1982 he played in the band of Captain Beefheart , on whose albums Doc At the Radar Station (1980) and Ice Cream For Crow (1982) he participated. After Beefheart broke up his band, Lucas worked temporarily as a producer. In 1989 he founded Gods & Monsters , a rock band with changing line-ups, including Jeff Buckley . In 1991, Lucas released the solo album Skeleton At the Feast . Gary Lucas founded The Killer Shrews with Jon Langford from the Mekons and Tony Maimone and recorded the album of the same name in 1994. He also designed a guitar accompaniment for the silent film " Golem " (1920), which he performed with the film. In the 90s he wrote the hit "Spider Web" with Joan Osborne .

Lucas is also active as a composer for films and documentaries, so u. a. 2001 for Lalee's Kin: The Legacy of Cotton .

The Edge Of Heaven (2003) stands out among his albums , on which he makes bizarre revisions of Chinese pop music. The albums Diplopia (2003) and The University of Absence (2004) were created with the Dutch lute player Jozef van Wissem, the album Beyond the Pale with the British electronic duo The Dark Poets . In 2006 he toured with the Beefheart tribute project Fast 'n' Bulbous , with which he also performed at the Frankfurt Jazz Festival. He continued to work with Lou Reed , John Cale , Nick Cave , John Sebastian , John Zorn , Bryan Ferry , Patti Smith , DJ Spooky , Damo Suzuki , Iggy Pop , Dr. John , Allen Ginsberg , Graham Parker and Najma Akhtar , in the jazz area with Roswell Rudd , Steve Swallow , Joe Lovano , Dave Liebman and Billy Bang . Lucas also gives lectures on the content, creation and background of his pieces. As a guitarist he also gives master classes at the Amsterdam Conservatory and the University of Hawaii .
