David Newton

David Newton (* 1958 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish jazz - pianist and composer .

David Newton grew up in Renfrewshire , Scotland; Oscar Peterson , Art Tatum and Erroll Garner were his early role models . After graduating from Leeds College of Music in 1979, David Newton worked as a freelance musician in the Yorkshire area and eventually became a theater musician at the Stephen Joseph Theater in Scarborough . After two and a half years he went to the Edinburgh Theater and became active in the Scottish jazz scene. He then moved to London with his school friend, bassist Alan Barnes , where he played in a quartet with Barnes, guitarist Martin Taylor and saxophonist Don Weller .

1985 the first recordings were made with Buddy DeFranco and Martin Taylor; In 1988 the first album followed under his own name for Linn Records , later for Candid Records. In the 1990s, Newton then played in a trio with bassist Dave Green and drummer Allan Ganley ( In Good Company ); He also recorded two solo albums, Return Journey (1992) and the Frank Sinatra portrait Twelfth of the Twelfth (1995) and played in a duo with pianist Brian Lemon . In 1997 David Newton and Alan Barnes recorded for Concord Jazz .

In the late 1990s, Newton began working with Tina May , Annie Ross , Claire Martin and eventually Stacey Kent , with whom he recorded several albums over the next decade ( The Tender Trap , 1998) and toured. In addition, Newton composed his own music for his own ensembles, as well as for Martin Taylor, Alan Barnes, Tina May or Claire Martin, as well as for some television productions. In 2003 David Newton worked again for several theater productions in Scarborough and London. From 2004 Newton worked in a trio with Matt Miles and Steve Brown ; most recently the "Portrait of a Woman" appeared on the Bright New Day label, Newton also worked on recordings of Spike Robinson , Martin Taylor ( Don't Fred ) and Don Weller .

David Newton, who is reminiscent of the lyricism of Enrico Pieranunzi , is one of the leading jazz pianists of his generation after Cook / Morton; He has received numerous awards, for example in 2014 he was voted best jazz pianist for the twelfth time in the British Jazz Awards .
