David Newton (* 1958 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish jazz - pianist and composer .

David Newton grew up in Renfrewshire , Scotland; Oscar Peterson , Art Tatum and Erroll Garner were his early role models . After graduating from Leeds College of Music in 1979, David Newton worked as a freelance musician in the Yorkshire area and eventually became a theater musician at the Stephen Joseph Theater in Scarborough . After two and a half years he went to the Edinburgh Theater and became active in the Scottish jazz scene. He then moved to London with his school friend, bassist Alan Barnes , where he played in a quartet with Barnes, guitarist Martin Taylor and saxophonist Don Weller .
