Live and act
Taylor comes from a musical family with a gypsy background . At the age of four he received guitar lessons from his father, bassist William "Buck" Taylor, who played the music of the Quintette du Hot Club de France , so that Taylor initially took Django Reinhardt as a model. At the age of eight he played regularly in his father's band. At the age of 15, he left school to become a professional musician. He played in Lennie Hastings ' orchestra , but also joined the Count Basie Orchestra . In the next few years he played frequently in London in a duo with both Peter Ind and Ike Isaacs , who now influenced him. He also introduced him to Stéphane Grappelli , in whose band he played for a while in the 1980s. Martin Taylor played with Stéphan Grappelli for 11 years. With Grappelli he also performed in North America, where he met David Grisman , with whom he recorded the album Sarabanda . Then he concentrated on his solo career, released his first LP ( skye boat ) in 1982 and recorded several albums for the Linn Records label . In the mid-1990s he founded the band Spirit of Django , but also continued to tour solo. For a while he was part of Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings . Taylor also wrote a textbook.
In 2007 he was honored as best guitarist with both the BBC Jazz Awards and the British Jazz Awards . In 2012 he received the Scottish Jazz Award in the Live Jazz category .
