The INNtöne Jazz Festival is a three-day international jazz festival that takes place annually at Whitsun in Diersbach in the rural Innviertel in Upper Austria. The organizer is a festival team whose artistic director has been organic farmer , jazz bandleader and music label entrepreneur Paul Zauner together with Klaus Stumvoll for many years. In 2018 the festival had 3500 visitors.

The festival was first held in 1986 under the name Jazzfestival Sigharting in the community of Sigharting , then for years in the Rothuberhalle in the small town of Raab (Upper Austria) as the Raab Jazz Festival . Internationally known musicians were involved from the start: in 1986, for example, Billy Cobham , Lou Donaldson , Ray Anderson and Terje Rypdal with their bands, in 1987 Christian Muthspiel , Dave Holland & Kenny Wheeler , Bob Stewart , Steve Coleman .

The festival has been called INNtöne since 1995 and took place this year and the following on the grounds of Sigharting Castle. Between 1997 and 1998 the jazz festival moved to Zell Castle in the municipality of Zell an der Pram , and then took place again for two years at Sigharting Castle. For a year in 2001 they tried the KIK in Ried im Innkreis .

Since 2002 the Inntöne Jazz Festival has been taking place on Paul Zauner's organic farm with the subtitle "Jazz on the farm". In order to make this possible technically and, above all, in terms of building regulations (escape routes, fire protection), extensive renovation work was carried out and the free-range organic breeding pigs moved away from the premises. The main stage is in the “Stadel”, there are also concerts in the old farm buildings, the “St. Pig's Pub "(the old pigsty) and the" Blue Horse Club ". An art exhibition in the “Nordstallgalerie” and a children's program complete the offer. Since 2010 the artist Rosa Parz has designed the "right stage design".

In 2020 the festival was postponed to August due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The program was largely limited to European artists due to travel restrictions. The number of visitors was limited to 750 guests per day. A total of 1650 paying guests came over the three days, which corresponds to around 60% of the usual visitors.

Structures

The festival is supported by the municipality of Diersbach, the federal state of Upper Austria and other sponsors named on the website. Around 70 radio stations worldwide (in the USA, Canada, Japan and Europe) broadcast concert recordings from Zauner's remote organic farm. The largest, most well-known in the German-speaking region, are Deutschlandfunk , the cultural channel WDR3 and ORF . Only through these media partnerships are the invitations of top-class, international musicians economically feasible.

There are still no gates and VIP areas guarded by a security service , but there is an atmosphere of mutual respect. A shuttle bus service is offered from Passau and Schärding train station for those arriving by train. It has also had its own children's program for years.

The music program conceptually offers not only international jazz greats but also a number of Austrian jazz musicians and those who draw inspiration from the respective traditional folk music. A special feature here is that Zauner "... gives all musicians the same status, regardless of whether they are jazz legends or newcomers."

The trade journal Downbeat wrote in 2019: “For a quarter of a century, INNtöne was hidden from the world. (Most of the visitors come from Austria, Germany and Switzerland.) It is financed through tickets, government grants, catering income (do you like vegan or vegetarian?) And occasional sponsors. Zauner, who also owns the independent label PAO Records , gets along with the fact that parking on his land is free of charge. Some festival goers have suggested building an amphitheater across from the farmhouse where his 83-year-old mother lives. He dismisses such ideas. 'I'll continue doing the same,' he said, 'Getting bigger wouldn't be good for my soul.' "

The reviewer wrote in the specialist magazine LondonJazzNews : “INNtöne is the remarkable creation of a remarkable figure in jazz. The food and the wine and the beer and the community and the family feel of this festival is something special. The Austrians use the word 'Servus!' as a greeting, goodbye or as 'Prosit!' That conveys the happy spirit of this hospitable festival. "

Jazzzeitung .de called the festival "the most beautiful jazz festival in the world"
