Christian Muthspiel
Christian Muthspiel (born September 20, 1962 in Judenburg , Styria ) is an Austrian jazz musician , composer , conductor and trombonist . He is the brother of the jazz musician Wolfgang Muthspiel and the son of the composer and choir trainer Kurt Muthspiel .
biography
Muthspiel began taking piano lessons from the age of six, and then also trombone lessons when he was eleven. He studied trombone at the Graz University of Music , for both classical and jazz, but did not complete this degree. With Tscho Theissing and Heinrich von Kalnein he founded the Orchesterforum Graz , which emerged in 1985 in the crossover area and recorded the album “From the Diary of Border Crossers”. He also played with Theissing, Alex Deutsch and Ewald Oberleitner in the group Fidelio & Blasius . From 1987 to 1988 he received a scholarship at the Banff Center in Banff , Canada in the subjects piano, trombone and composition. Numerous appearances at jazz festivals in Europe and America follow.
Since 2003 Muthspiel has primarily been active as a composer and conductor, including his own cycle of very specially programmed concerts with the “ Camerata Salzburg ” and the “ Munich Chamber Orchestra ”. Part of this cycle is the four-part orchestral project “mozart loops” in the Philharmonie Essen and in Salzburg, which allows modern classics to meet pop songs. He also conducted the Klangforum Wien , the Bruckner Orchestra Linz , the State Orchestra Hanover , the Tonkünstler Orchestra Lower Austria , the orchestra recreation, the ensemble die reihe u. a.
Muthspiel is active both in improvised music and in composed music and tries to combine these two worlds. He appears as a pianist, trombonist, composer and conductor.
Works
His list of works includes a. a piano, a violin and a trombone concerto, a double concerto for violin, cello and orchestra, multimedia works (e.g. Linzer Klangwolke 2002 or "Stodt aus Staa" for Ostbahn Kurti and the Klangforum Wien), chamber music, theater music and choral works .
The trio with the French vibraphone virtuoso Franck Tortiller and the Viennese bassist Georg Breinschmid is from 2005 2006 produces too Muthspiel's main force in the field of jazz and the "against the wind" CD, the music of the Austrian jazz musician Werner Pirchner and Harry Pepl to content Has.
The concert for trombone and large orchestra "ENNAHH ... (to Albert Mangelsdorff )", commissioned by ORF and Philharmonie Essen, was performed in 2006 by the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and Christian Muthspiel as a soloist at the Wiener Musikverein and Linz Brucknerhaus , further performances in Germany in 2007.
The often played Ernst Jandl solo performance “for and with Ernst” as well as joint projects with Hermann Beil and Manfred Karge (commission for the music theater “Die Schicksalsperücke” in the Vienna Mozart Year 2006) are the results of Muthspiel's preoccupation with literature and the connection between word and music .
For the 50th birthday of radio station Ö1 in 2017, Muthspiel was invited to redesign around a hundred program IDs, which were recorded by the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.
