Kurt Muthspiel

Kurt Muthspiel (born December 31, 1931 in Linz ; † March 18, 2001 in Graz ) was an Austrian choir teacher and composer .

Life

Kurt Muthspiel grew up in the cities of Nuremberg , Saalfelden and Salzburg . While he was studying music at the Mozarteum in the subjects of clarinet , flute and school music, Kurt Muthspiel learned the profession of typesetter in a printing company .

From 1959 on he headed the Styria printing company in Judenburg , where he also appeared as the editor of the “Murtaler Zeitung”. In 1976, Muthspiel moved to the head office in Graz as deputy technical director, where he was promoted to director of Styria Medien AG - the third largest media company in Austria - in 1983 and headed the business until his retirement in 1995.

Kurt Muthspiel was married and the father of four children, including the two jazz musicians Christian Muthspiel and Wolfgang Muthspiel .

Musical passion

Working as a choir director since 1955, Kurt Muthspiel founded the well-known a cappella choir Zeltweg in 1960, which he also directed for thirty years. In 1968 he started the annual Styrian Singing Week and was its artistic director for 25 years. In addition to being a choir director, Muthspiel also composed himself, mostly masses and songs. For his services to choral and folk music, in particular the collection and publication of sacred and secular choral works from the Alpine region, Kurt Muthspiel was awarded the Hanns Koren Culture Prize of the State of Styria in 1985. In 1993 he received the Archduke Johann Medal.
