Slider (parachute)

Slider patent dated December 31, 1985

The Slider (dtsch. Rider or Öffnungsverzögerer ) is a rectangular piece of fabric ( parachute material with reinforced edges) of about 50 x 30 cm size, which finds use in skydiving. At each corner of the slider there is a metal eyelet (grommet) through which the lines of the parachute canopy pass. When the parachute is opened, the slider is located below the parachute, holds the suspension line bundles together and thereby prevents the parachute from suddenly opening, which could lead to severe injuries or even death. The air resistance caused by the still existing falling speed keeps the slider up. However, the parachute achieves a braking effect even in this state, which is why the slider is opposed to less air resistance and it "slides" down on the suspension lines and finally releases the parachute completely.
