Ewald Oberleitner

Ewald Oberleitner (born November 4, 1937 in Leoben ) is an Austrian jazz musician (double bass, clarinet, percussion).

Career

Oberleitner studied bass and clarinet at what is now the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz , where he taught ensemble direction , musical analysis and jazz double bass from 1973 to 2003. He played on the European scene in the 1960s, where he worked with Albert Mangelsdorff , Eje Thelin and Slide Hampton , among others . Since 1974 he has been playing in the Neighbors trio with Dieter Glawischnig and John Preininger , who have worked with guests such as Anthony Braxton , Paul Bley , Karl Berger , Roscoe Mitchell , John Surman and Dino Saluzzi . Oberleitner is also a member of Karlheinz Miklin's trio ; he also works with Berndt Luef and with Tone Janša . In the 1990s he formed the group The Quartet with Heinrich von Kalnein , Gernot Wolfgang and Klaus Hofer , with which he has presented several albums.

In Braxton's opinion, Oberleitner is one of the most renowned jazz bassists in the world.
