Berndt Luef (born August 9, 1952 in Knittelfeld , Styria ) is an Austrian vibraphonist and composer in the field of jazz and rock music .

life and work

Luef wanted to study piano after graduating from high school, but lost the little finger and the ring finger of his left hand in an accident at work during a holiday internship in 1970; the middle finger remained stiff. He learned to play the drums because he still wanted to become a musician, and one year later began to study at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz ( classical & jazz). After completing his classical studies in 1979, he concentrated on the vibraphone (artistic diploma 1983). Since then he has lived as a freelance artist in Graz .

Luef played as a drummer in various ensembles , for which he also wrote compositions. Between 1979 and 1990 he was a member of the rock group Mirror , from 1984 on as the leader of the group. In 1982 he founded the Berndt Luef Trio with vibraphone, bass and drums and in 1993 the music collective Jazztett Forum Graz , comprising up to 12 musicians , for which he wrote numerous cyclical compositions in which he also dealt with political events (such as “The Bosnian Tragedy "on the civil war in ex-Yugoslavia and" epitaph "on the death march of the Hungarian Jews through Styria in 1945). He also works as a soloist.

Luef is also a founding member of the cabaret group Die Blauen Engel (with Leo Lukas, among others ).

Between 1988 and 2006 he was the honorary head of the music department in the Forum Stadtpark .
