Eje Thelin

Eje Thelin (* 9. September 1938 in Jönköping as Eilert Ove Thelin ; † 18th May 1990 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish jazz - trombone .

Life

Thelin was a self-taught musician . As a teenager, he played in the popular Swedish Dixieland group Pygmé Jazz Band . He later turned to modern jazz and was a member of Putte Wickman's sextet . 1958/1959 he played with the American drummer Joe Harris . Between 1961 and 1965 he had his own group that toured across Europe with. In 1964 he played with George Russell in Copenhagen . Between 1967 and 1972 he taught at the Graz University of Music . During part of this time he formed a group with Joachim Kühn devoted to free jazz . In 1973 he worked with John Surman and then devoted himself to music training in Sweden. He also had his own band with Harald Svensson, Bruno Råberg and Leroy Lowe, which developed in the direction of fusion ; he also experimented with electronics . He has also performed with Roy Brooks , Palle Danielsson , Kenny Wheeler , Evan Parker and Graham Collier . In the 1980s he devoted himself more to composition and also wrote for large European formations.

His technique and rhythmic intensity were admired among trombonists.
