Kai Kanthak

Kai Kanthak (* 1955 ) is a German jazz bassist .

Kanthak first took guitar lessons before switching to bass. He studied music in Essen, Düsseldorf and Cologne. In 1975 he and Mash Temme belonged to Helge Schneider's jazz trio , with whom he also recorded his first album. From 1977 he played in Theo Jörgensmann's trio , which was then expanded to a quartet and performed at the German Jazz Festival. At the New Jazz Meeting Baden-Baden in 1979 he was part of the Clarinet Summit with Jörgensmann, Perry Robinson , Gianluigi Trovesi , John Carter , Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky and Günter “Baby” Sommer . Then he was a member of Georg Gräwes pit sound orchestra , and then worked with musicians from the Cologne scene in the Draft quartet and with Klaus König . He also played with musicians such as Gunter Hampel , John Tchicai , Petras Vyšniauskas , Andreas Willers and Tomas Kutavičius . From 1995 to 2009 he temporarily stopped his musical activities and concentrated on photography and PC-based image creation. He currently plays in the CONTACT 4tett with Theo Jörgensmann, Evert Brettschneider and Bernd Oezsevim .
