John Carter (clarinetist)
John Wallace Carter (born September 24, 1929 in Fort Worth , Texas , † March 31, 1991 in Inglewood , California ) was an American jazz musician ( clarinet , alto saxophone ), music educator and composer .
life and work
Carter played with Ornette Coleman and Charles Moffett senior in Fort Worth in the late 1940s and taught Julius Hemphill . After studying music at Lincoln University (Missouri) , he became a music teacher. In 1961 he moved to the west coast for professional reasons. In 1965 he founded a quartet in Los Angeles with trumpeter Bobby Bradford ("New Art Jazz Ensemble"), but also played with Hampton Hawes and Harold Land . From 1972 he led his own groups.
Carter had been a member of James Newton's woodwind ensemble since 1980 . After Joachim Ernst Berendt's experience in Europe at a clarinet summit with Perry Robinson , Gianluigi Trovesi , Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky , Bernd Konrad and Theo Jörgensmann , he founded another American clarinet in 1981 with Alvin Batiste , Jimmy Hamilton and David Murray Summit . After his time as a music teacher, he founded a special Wind College in Culver City , which had an international reputation, to train wind players . The Dutch wind player Ab Baars is one of his students there .
In the 1980s he wrote five suites for octets (each published on CD), which he summarized under the title Roots and Folklore: Episodes in the Development of American Folk Music and which convincingly depict the history of African Americans - from the slave hunt to the present day . With this series of suites he made American music history. In his compositions, Carter was also concerned with creating a balance between white, African American and continental African music.
Just like James Newton, Andrew Cyrille , Marty Ehrlich and Mark Dresser in the USA, the Ab Baars Trio in Europe is dedicated to the compositions of Carter and keeps them in their repertoire.
