Ab Baars (* 21st November 1955 in Axel ) is a Dutch Jazz - Tenor saxophonist and clarinetist of the modern creative jazz .

Life

Baars began playing the saxophone in 1970 and played in the Philips Brass Band. He studied with Leo von Oostrom at the Rotterdam Conservatory and attended workshops with Butch Morris . In the 1970s he founded the group Cumulus , in which u. a. Harry van Wit , Wolter Wierbos and Mariette Rouppe van der Voort played, and played in the Trio Trebbel with Guus Janssen and van der Voort. In the 1980s he played with Roscoe Mitchell (1987), the Theo Loevendie Consort , the Maarten Altena Octet, the Sextet of Guus Janssen and became a member of Misha Mengelberg's Instant Composers Pool , in whose Monk Project he was involved. In 1989 he received the renowned Boy Edgar Prize and a scholarship from the Dutch Ministry of Culture to study in the USA, where he went to John Carter . He played u. a. with Sunny Murray , Han Bennink , Steve Lacy , Roswell Rudd , Theo Jörgensmann , Ken Vandermark , Michael Moore and Cecil Taylor . Since 1991 he has had his own trio, which currently includes bassist Wilbert de Joode and drummer Martin van Duynhoven . With Luc Ex , Hamid Drake and Ingrid Laubrock he forms Luc Ex 'Assemblée .

Baars is the partner of the Dutch composer Ig Henneman .
