Martin van Duynhoven (born June 13, 1942 in Boxmeer ) is a Dutch jazz drummer of creative jazz .

Live and act

Van Duynhoven collected first musical band experience in a wind band (a march orchestra drumming and brass) in Uden and studied from 1959 to 1962 at the conservatory by Tilburg and at the Academy Den Bosch . In 1963 he moved to Amsterdam , where he a. a. played with Maarten Altena , Boy Edgar , Hans Dulfer and Nedly Elstak . In 1966 he won second prize in a competition in Vienna , jury members of which were Ron Carter , Cannonball Adderley and Mel Lewis , and a year later he won first prize at the Loosdrecht jazz festival . Dick van der Capellen brought him into his free trio, with whom he was involved in the album The Present Is Past (1967). He then played with many well-known jazz musicians such as Willem Breuker , Chet Baker , Mal Waldron (recorded in 1971), Marion Brown , Booker Ervin , Paul Gonsalves and Dexter Gordon, and performed at festivals such as Molde , Montreux and Juan-les-Pins .
In the 1970s he was part of the quartet of the composer Theo Loevendie . In 1975 he studied with Charlie Persip in the Jazzmobile , Andrew Cyrille and Stanley Crouch in New York on a scholarship from the Dutch Ministry of Culture and played with Sheila Jordan , Roswell Rudd (with whom he toured a lot afterwards) and Lester Bowie . He then founded his own "Martin van Duynhoven Percussie Ensemble", which performed with several (3 to 20) drummers or percussionists and also with acrobats. He also played in the band of the pianist Leo Cuypers ( Zeeland Suite ), in the quintets of Loevendie ( Atlantis Suite ) and Soesja Citroen , in the Paradise Regained Orchestra (founded by Elstak), in the Waterland Bigband by Loek Dikker and was on tour with the quartet of Roswell Rudd and Hans Dulfer.
Since 1982 he has given many solo concerts and concerts in schools. In 1984 he won the Boy Edgar Prize . From 1985 to 1992 he was the drummer in Willem van Manen's Contraband . Since the 1990s he has played with the tenor saxophonist Ab Baars ' trio , with whom he has recorded several records, with Ig Henneman , with Misha Mengelberg ( Two Days in Chicago ) and, since 1997, in the quintet of pianist and composer Frank van Bommel .

In addition to his jazz music, he also works as a graphic designer.
His brother is the drummer Fred van Duynhoven .
