Stanley Crouch
Stanley Crouch (born December 14, 1945 in Los Angeles , † September 16, 2020 in New York City ) was an American jazz musician ( drums ), writer and publicist.
Live and act
Crouch began his career as a musician with the pianist Raymond King in 1966 and worked from 1967 in the formation The Quartet , which temporarily included David Murray and James Newton . In 1974 Crouch wrote the Ellington Suite and from 1969 to 1975 taught drama, literature and jazz history at Claremont College . From 1975 he lived in New York and then worked as a writer; in 1970 he published a volume of poetry. In addition, as an influential jazz critic, Crouch represented a comparatively narrow conception of jazz according to the current understanding - only what is rooted in swing is jazz - with which he the performance practice ofWynton Marsalis at Jazz at Lincoln Center . He has also written liner notes for countless jazz albums and has also worked as a producer, for example for Joe Henderson's 1985 album The State of the Tenor - Live at the Village Vanguard . In 2009, Crouch was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
