Paul Stocker

Paul Stocker (* 1952 in California ) is an American jazz musician ( alto and soprano saxophone , bass clarinet , flute , composition ).

Live and act

Stocker, who is a self-taught musician , moved to Europe in 1970. First he settled in Spain, where he worked with musicians such as Tete Montoliu , Pony Poindexter , Lou Bennett , Billy Brooks , Peer Wyboris , Horacio Fumero, Eric Peter and Manolo Elías. He then lived in Paris, where he performed with François Jeanneau , Howard McGhee , Saheb Sarbib , Jacky Samson and Steve Lacy . He also made contact with the London scene, where he worked with Mike Osborne , Henry Lowther andKathy Stobart played. In the late 1970s he moved to Amsterdam, where he initially belonged to the groups of JC Tans and Burton Greene , and later recorded with Joe Malinga, Sean Bergin and Gerard Ammerlaan. In 1985 he formed the formation Compass with Jan Kuiper , Niko Langenhuijsen and Pierre Courbois , which recorded the album Sans Titre in 1987 .

Since 1983 he has directed the Maiden Voyage Jazz Orchestra , for which he also composed. This resulted in the Paul Stocker Big Band , which also had several appearances at Spanish jazz festivals. Stocker has been based in Spain again since 2001. In Granada he led two quartets that played across the country, as well as the 13-piece world music orchestra Dubi Dubi Band . He also belonged to the Luisitania Jazz Machine of the pianist Javier Arroyo and to the group Urban Sax .

In addition to his work as a soloist, Stocker taught for four years at the Sweelinck Conservatorium Amsterdam , then from 1990 to 2001 at the University of Amsterdam . From 2003 to 2008 he was artistic director of the Escuela de Música Moderna de La Zubia . He is currently teaching at the Aula de Músicas in Madrid .
