Live and act
Montoliu, who was blind from birth , was already interested in jazz as a child. After studying the piano, he played with Don Byas in 1947 , who introduced him to bebop . He made recordings with musicians ranging from Lionel Hampton , with whom he toured Spain and France (1956), Rahsaan Roland Kirk (1963), Anthony Braxton (1974) and the flamenco singer Mayte Martín (1996). Ben Webster and Dexter Gordon hired the pianist regularly . He also played duos with Chick Corea and with the saxophonistGeorge Coleman , who received international acclaim. Since the early 1960s he also worked in Denmark and Germany. In 1968 Kurt Edelhagen brought him to Cologne to record with his big band. In 1967 and 1979 he toured the United States, but since then has had to cut back due to illness.
Montoliu had excellent technique and was both an expressive soloist and an integrative ensemble player.
