Mayte Martín (* 19th April 1965 in Barcelona , Spain as María Teresa Martín Cadierno ) is a Spanish Flamenco - and Bolero - singer and - composer . She is one of the most important flamenco singers of her generation and dedicates part of her career to the Spanish-American genre of bolero.

biography

As a child she began singing in the family circle and at the age of ten she won a singing competition organized by a supermarket . She then performed regularly as an amateur at peñas flamencas in Barcelona and the suburbs and became a professional musician at the age of 16 . During this time she learned various flamenco palo by listening to recordings from flamenco singers such as Juan Valderrama , Manolo Caracol , Camarón de la Isla , Lole Montoya and Pastora Pavón, known as La Niña de los Peines . She received professional singing training and practiced her skills as a cantaora de atrás (singer for flamenco dance ).

In 1987 she won the first prize Lámpara Minera at the Festival del Cante de las Minas in La Unión . Two years later she received the Antonio Chacón Prize for the best Malagueña at the Concurso Nacional de Arte Flamenco de Córdoba . At the same time she started an international career after being invited by Peter Gabriel to the Womad Festival . In 1994 she recorded her first album Muy Frágil with the guitarist Chicuelo and arrangements by Joan Albert Amargós , who also works with well-known flamenco musicians such as Paco de Lucía and Camarón de la Isla . In 2000 she released her second album Querencia , which was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for best flamenco album .

Although she was already well known as a singer, she appeared again as cantaora de atrás when she met the dancer Belén Maya in 1996 , with whom she was internationally recognized under the titles Mayte Martín + Belén Maya (since 1996) and Flamenco de Cámara (since 2003) toured the world.

In 1997 she received the City of Barcelona Prize , awarded by the City Council, and the National Music Prize for Best Flamenco Composer.

In 1993 she started jazz - pianist Tete Montoliu a professional collaboration that lasted until his death 1997th Together they recorded jazz-oriented boleros on the album Free Boleros in 1996 . In her second bolero album, Tiempo de Amar (2002), Omara Portuondo plays as a guest in several pieces.

In 2005 she celebrated her 30th anniversary as an artist at the Palau de la Música Catalana with a concert entitled Mis 30 años de amor al Arte . She then toured Europe with it . This concert was released on DVD in 2006 and shows her as a flamenco and bolero singer. In 2009 she presented an album of songs whose lyrics were written by Manuel Alcántara .
