Juan Gómez "Chicuelo" (* 1968 in Cornellà de Llobregat near Barcelona as Juan Ignacio Gómez Gorjón ) is a Spanish flamenco musician ( guitar , composition ) who also works in the field of flamenco jazz .

Chicuelo began at the age of twelve with the guitarist Casimiro González; he was then a student of Manolo Saniúcar and his brother Isidro Muñoz and was recognized as a guitarist in 1989 by Sabicas . At the beginning of his career he worked in the flamenco show Tablao de Carmen with Mario Escudero, Angelita Vargas, Miguel de la Tolea, Eva Yerbabuena , Sara Baras , Adrián Galia, Belén Maya , Antonio "El Pipa" and Joaquín Grilo. He has accompanied singers such as Enrique Morente , Rancapino, Chano Lobato, José Mercé , Duquende , Mayte Martín , Diego el Cigala , Carmen Linares and Potito and shared the stage with musicians such as Chano Domínguez , Carles Benavent , Jorge Pardo and Jordi Bonell as well as with the Pianist Maria João Pires .

Chicuelo has participated in recordings with Tomatito , Mayte Martín, Ginesa Ortega , Joan Manuel Serrat , Antonio Carmona and Jordi Tonel and often accompanied Miguel Poveda , with whom he toured in Europe, Japan and North America. In 1996 he was involved as a director on the album Cambalache by Guitarras Mestizas . He was musical director of various productions such as Tarantos and composer of Inconnexus XXI , performed by the Compañia Somorrostro .

His debut album under his own name, Cómplices (2000), was rated “best solo guitar album” by Flamenco Hoy magazine . In 2007 the solo album Diapasión followed . Chicuelo continued to play with important flamenco artists and produced records for Duquende, Ginesa Ortega and Miguel Poveda, among others. He also accompanied the songwriter Joan Manuel Serrat . He also wrote music for Pablo Berger's silent film Blancanieves , an adaptation of the Snow White story in the world of bullfighting; In 2013 he received a Goya for the title song of the film .

In 2016, the album Sintonías was created with the singer Marinah (from the flamenco hip-hop band Ojos de Brujo ) . Together with the jazz pianist Marco Mezquida , with whom he has appeared occasionally since 2013, he released the album Conexión in 2017 , which was also presented in a trio with percussionist Paco de Mode in Germany, for example at Jazzahead .

As a soloist, he presented his solo album Uña y carne in 2019 , on which he was accompanied by trumpeter Carlos Sarduy, bassist Carles Benavent and cellist Martín Meléndez. Shortly thereafter, Mezquida No hay dos sin tres followed , another album with the pianist Marco Mezquida, which, like Conexión , was recognized internationally by critics and audiences.
