Marco Mezquida

Marco Mezquida (born March 11, 1987 in Maó , Menorca ) is a Spanish jazz musician ( piano , composition ).

Mezquida, whose parents are teachers, started studying music at the age of three; from the age of seven he received classical piano lessons at the Municipal Music School of Maó; later he received lessons in jazz piano and improvisation from Suso González. At the Escuela Superior de Música de Cataluña in Barcelona, ​​where he studied until 2009, he was taught by Agustí Fernández , Lluís Vidal , Albert Bover, Juan de la Rubia and Luca Chiantor.

Mezquida performed a solo program at the Palau de la Música in Barcelona at a young age . His trio album My Friend Marko (2013, with Marko Lohikari and Carlos Falanga) received rave reviews and an award from Enderrock magazine . He played in a duo with Silvia Pérez Cruz, Celeste Alías, Alfonso Vilallonga and Sol Picó, and he also presented his solo album La hora fertil . There was also collaboration with Lee Konitz , Dave Liebman , Chris Cheek , Eliot Zigmund , Perico Sambeat , Javier Colina , Gorka Benítez and Jorge Rossy .

Together with the flamenco guitarist Chicuelo , with whom Mezquida has performed since 2013, he released the album Conexión in 2017 , which was also presented in a trio with percussionist Paco de Mode at Jazzahead . This followed in 2019 with Chicuelo No hay dos sin tres , which, like Conexión, was also recognized internationally by critics and the public. Together with percussionist Aleix Tobias and cellist Martín Meléndez, he has also been dedicating himself to the works of Maurice Ravel from a jazz perspective since 2016 in the Ravel's Dreams program , which he also presented at Elbjazz 2019. He can also be heard on albums by S´Albaida , Juan Pablo Balcázar, Carlos Falanga, Giulia Valle, Guillermo McGill , Michael Olivera and Memoria Uno .

Between 2011 and 2013, Mezquida was named “Musician of the Year” several times by the Asociación de Músicos de Jazz y Moderna de Cataluña . He has composed music for the theater and for short films. He also teaches at the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu in Barcelona.
